Large Wood Rattleback

A rattleback creates one of the most inexplicable phenomena in the world of science. Measuring 25cm in length, this toy will swing counter-clockwise with ease, not unlike a top. However, once you try to swing it clockwise, you’ll witness a spin-reversal and will rattle until it comes to a complete stop and reverses its direction. An ancient toy also known as a Celtic or Wobble stone that has been enchanting people of all ages for centuries. 

A spectacular piece made in Canada by fine wood crafter Emmanuel Péluchon using locally sourced wood and natural products only (linseed oil, wax and resin) to create beautifully finished goods. This is an anagyra (rattleback) with a very pronounced reversal. Crafted and assembled to to accentuate its atypical movement, the behaviour of this object truly seems to go against the laws of physics.

 ABOUT THE DESIGNER   EMMANUEL PÉLUCHON

Emmanuel Péluchon discovered his passion for wood at the age of 18, during an internship with the Compagnons du Tour de France. Today, he applies the knowledge acquired in France and Quebec to making high quality furniture. He likes to use wood in its entirety, with natural finishes based on wax, resin and linseed oil. He favours local woods within their eco-forestry cooperative Bois d'exception in Quebec.
