Piston Burr 7 Puzzle

This solid aluminium burr puzzle is precision engineered using a CNC milling process, achieving an exceptional level of accuracy where every edge, slot, and internal tolerance is machined to exacting standards.

Each component fits together with deliberate tightness, making every interaction feel purposeful. Sliding, lifting, and rotating the pieces reveals just how carefully the internal geometry has been designed. The precision engineering ensures that solving it is not only a mental challenge but also a tactile experience, where the feel of the metal is as important as the logic behind it.

Externally, the puzzle is identical in appearance to the well-known 10-move Piston Burr, maintaining a familiar and deceptively simple structure. However, it has been re-engineered to require a 7-move sequential solution to release the first component, subtly altering the solving path and introducing a fresh layer of complexity for experienced puzzlers.

The design comes from Streetwise, who do not include solution sheets with their puzzles. This is a deliberate philosophy: by withholding instructions, they encourage extended exploration, experimentation, and discovery. The intention is that puzzlers engage more deeply with the object itself, allowing the solution to emerge through persistence and insight rather than quick reference. The puzzle is designed not just to be solved, but to be experienced—rewarding patience, observation, and the satisfaction of uncovering its hidden mechanical sequence entirely on your own.

A very difficult Burr designed by American Peter Marineau and produced by Wil Strijbos’s Streetwise Puzzles.This six-piece burr was designed before Bill Cutler finished his computer program to analyse all possible six piece burr combinations (started 1974 but not completed until August 1990) and is still to this day is the highest level unique solution burr known to have been designed without a computer.
